What & how much do you eat while training…
I read the nutrition article in the library…but need some more information. I am a 5′6″ female, med. bone and weigh 175 lbs (gasp!) at 52 yrs of age. I am considered roughly 20 lbs overweight. I’ve drastically increased my exercise being very loyal to training and LOVE it! I actually HATE rest days, I am so addicted now! My caloric intake has been between 1550 - 1850 calories a day and I easily burn 500+ on days I train (6X a week). Tuesdays (tri training class) I burn 1,000 calories and do make an effort to eat even more on that day! I have lost only ONE POUND!!!! I’m wondering…. Am I in starvation mode? Maybe I’m not eating enough. But I thought I’d be burning fat and ridding myself of the “reserves.” I’ve only been at this for about 6 weeks. I’ve heard plenty about building muscle which weighs more than fat, etc. Does it take time for the muscle/fat ratio to balance out and THEN I lose some weight? It’s been very frustrating. Good thing I’m having fun training and not just doing it to lose the weight or I would have given up by now.
Oh… And I’ve been lifting weights 2X a week since Labor Day 2007. All this cardio and weight lifting too has not been in vain… I feel great, but I look exactly the same. No inches lost, one pound off….just stopped gaining.
Is there a good book out there for nutrition for Triathletes (and perhaps one that needs to lose a few lbs)?
Thanks for listening!

Beginner Runner at 52 Years Old
I can’t believe I’m running. I never was even remotely interested in it. When I decided to do the Tri, it was the one sport I dreaded and was sure would be the most difficult for me. Not so! Swimming (even thought I was on a park district swim team and took life guard training 40 years ago) is my most difficult sport. I’ve been faithful in running about 3X a week and it’s paid off greatly. In January, when I started, a 1 min jog sent my heart rate into the 90% or more zone! It took me over 40 min. to do 2.3 miles. Many people walk faster than this! LOL I am now down to 3.1 in 33 min. Not bad for an old lady who has never run before! My best time was in the Tri Training Class when we sprinted one way and jogged back. We did 3 miles in 30 min (I should say, we, as in the slow group…and I was the slowest of the slow group! LOL).
I have looked up some of my friend’s 5K race times from last year and am competing against those times (unbeknown to them). It gives me a goal and a motive to try harder.
For almost two years, I have suffered from some sort of foot tendonistis. After a couple of stints with a physical therapist, I’m good as new. So the fact that I’m running pain free is truly a miracle!

Swimming Steady
My weakest sport of the Tri… I’ve been having trouble with endurance and breathing. The breathing would be so off, I’d hyperventilate. Today was the first time I actually could do several laps in a row and not “panic”. I find if I’ve used fins for a few laps, then take them off, I swim MUCH better! The last few times I’ve been in the water, I’ve enjoyed the sport. This has been the most intimidating sport for me. And to think I used to be on the park district swim team almost 40 years ago! What happened! LOL!
Anyway….just trying to keep it slow and steady for now and work on form and endurance.

Post Mid-Life Crisis
Over hearing a conversation about how fun the sprint triathlon is (our town in Naperville, IL has one in June) and how great support and friendships developed at our local YMCA’s triathlon training club, I felt compelled to do it! So here I am…. Age 52 and never had been involved in an organized race before. My parents would be very impressed because no one in my family has ever done anything like this or has even ever been athletic. My mother was amazed I even played tennis. She’d be behind me 100% so I have made my user name after her nick name for me, “Tizzy MacLish”. I have no clue where she got that name. It isn’t even close to my real name. My race is dedicated to what died of; ovarian cancer. My father died of pancreatic cancer. Both were in their 60s when they passed away…much too young. I hope to live a healthy life and live as long as most of their relatives did….in their 80s and 90s. So…this is why I thought doing a triathlon would be fun!
I’ve been “officially” training now for two weeks. Hoping I have my base, but think I may have been overtraining a bit. Trying to get more information on the web and have joined that tri club at the Y. My husband bought me a new bike yesterday! He’s very supportive and proud of what I’m doing. I hope I can inspire him to get fit as well.
Today I have a rest day. Tomorrow… Swim… Tuesdays at 5 AM, the Ti
